• Duration. A one-hour cocktail set costs less than a two-hour cocktail-and-reception booking. Most weddings land somewhere between 60 and 120 minutes of performance time.
• Format. Roving cocktail-hour magic and table-to-table magic during dinner are priced differently, because table-to-table takes longer to cover the same number of guests — the magician has to work through each table individually rather than drifting with a mingling crowd.

Table-to-table magic during the reception is a different job. Every table needs a visit, so the price scales more directly with how many tables there are and how much time you’ve allowed. If your reception has 20 tables and you want each one visited, that’s a longer booking than a 90-minute cocktail hour with the same guest count.

Is a cheap wedding magician a good idea?

Not usually, and it’s worth knowing why before you go looking for the lowest quote. A wedding is a one-take event — there’s no second attempt if the entertainment falls flat in front of 100 guests. Magicians pricing well below the market are often newer, working from a small routine that doesn’t hold up over a full booking, or padding numbers with volume (multiple weddings a day) rather than giving your day proper attention.

That doesn’t mean the most expensive option is automatically the best one either. It means the question to ask isn’t “what’s the cheapest,” it’s “what does this price actually include” — real wedding experience, a routine built for a mixed-age guest list, and someone who’ll actually talk to you about your run sheet beforehand.
